Eligibility Requirements

To sponsor a spouse or dependent child, you must:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Not be inadmissible to Canada
  • Not be receiving social assistance (except for disability)
  • Be able to prove you can meet the basic financial needs of the person(s) you are sponsoring

Processing Times:

(Current as of 2025, subject to change)

  • Spouse or Partner Sponsorship (Outside Canada): 8 to 12 months
  • Spouse or Partner Sponsorship (Inside Canada – Inland): 10 to 14 months
  • Dependent Child Sponsorship: 8 to 12 months

The IRCC Website announced 24 months, and processing times may increase. The Immigration Levels Plan sets the number of newcomers Canada plans to welcome each year. If there are more people applying than available spaces, processing times may increase.

Note: Inland applicants may be eligible for an Open Work Permit while the application is in process.

FAQs – Family Sponsorship

You can sponsor your: Spouse (legally married partner) Common-law partner (lived together for at least 12 consecutive months) Conjugal partner (if you are unable to live together due to circumstances beyond your control) Dependent children (under 22 years of age and not married or in a common-law relationship)

Only if you qualify as common-law partners or conjugal partners. Canada does not allow sponsorship based on dating relationships alone.

There is no minimum income requirement for sponsoring a spouse, partner, or dependent child (except in cases where the child has a child of their own). However, you must demonstrate the ability to support the sponsored individual(s) without social assistance.

Yes, your spouse or partner may be eligible to apply for a visitor visa or, if applying inland, an open work permit while waiting for the sponsorship decision.

Outland sponsorship applies when the sponsored person lives outside Canada. It allows for travel in and out of Canada and generally has faster processing. Inland sponsorship is used when the sponsored person is already in Canada. It allows for an open work permit but limits international travel during processing.

Yes, if you are the biological or legal parent, and the child meets the definition of a dependent, you can submit a sponsorship application even if no spouse or partner is involved.

You may have the right to appeal the decision to the Immigration Appeal Division (IAD), depending on the case. We can assess the reason for refusal and advise on the most effective course of action.

Express Entry – Post-Invitation Support

We do not submit nomination requests to the provinces. El Camino assists only after the nomination is granted.
